What Does Solar Panel Removal Cost in NJ?
There’s no single number for this. Residential and commercial removal are different jobs with different pricing models, and even within residential work, two houses with the same panel count can come in at very different prices depending on the roof. What we can tell you is what drives the cost and how the industry generally prices this work, so a quote makes sense before you get one.
What drives the cost of residential removal
- Roof pitch, height, and type. Steep roofs and multi-story homes need rigging and fall protection, which adds labor time. Slate, tile, and other fragile roofing materials take longer to work around than asphalt shingle.
- Panel count. More panels lower the cost per panel, since mobilization is a fixed cost spread across the job.
- Access. Tight lot lines, no driveway staging area, or equipment that has to come in by hand instead of by lift all add time.
- Racking type. Roof-mount and ground-mount systems come apart differently, and ground-mount often means pulling posts and backfilling afterward.
- Scope. Are we removing panels only, or the full system down to the inverter and conduit? A full teardown costs more than a panel-only pickup.

Commercial and utility-scale jobs aren’t priced per panel the way residential work usually is. The industry typically prices these by the watt, by the acre for ground-mount systems, or as a custom project quote based on site conditions. A 2-megawatt commercial array, for example, can run anywhere from $60,000 to $150,000+ to fully decommission, depending on site access, racking type, and how much site restoration is required afterward.
Ground-mount commercial sites add their own factors: post extraction, trench backfilling, and re-vegetation of the site once the array is gone. Environmental remediation, like soil testing around older installations, can also factor in if the site requires it.

Nationally, simple panel pickup (where the system is already disconnected) tends to run $150 to $400 per panel. Full removal, including licensed electrical disconnection, typically runs $300 to $850 per panel in the Northeast, where labor rates are higher than the national average. A standard 15-to-25-panel residential job usually lands somewhere in the thousands, not the hundreds, once you add up labor, disconnection, transport, and disposal.

Why there’s little to no resale value
We assess every system on a case-by-case basis, and if there’s genuine value left in a retired system, we’ll factor that into your quote. But for most residential panels, there’s little to no resale market. Panel technology moves fast, older modules lose efficiency over time, and there’s no real secondary market for a mismatched set of 10-year-old panels off someone’s roof. Recyclers typically charge a per-panel processing fee, or in some cases take panels for free in exchange for the materials, but they’re not paying homeowners for used systems.
That’s part of why this service costs what it does. It’s not a byproduct being resold at a markup. It’s disposal and labor, done the right way.
